This week on Well with Arielle Lorre, I sat down with Mark Manson, author of The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck. His perspective completely reframed the way I think about confidence, stress, and what truly deserves my energy.
Here are the biggest takeaways that stuck with me:
1. Problems Never Go Away — They Level Up
There is no stress-free life. That doesn’t exist.
You either avoid hard things and feel anxiety and stagnation… or you choose meaningful hard things that lead to growth and self-respect.
The goal isn’t to have no problems.
It’s to have better problems.
2. Confidence Comes From Competence
You don’t magically become confident — you become competent.
We love the idea of “manifesting” confidence, but real confidence comes after: reps, failure, embarrassment, doing it anyway
Stop chasing the feeling.
Chase the skill.
3. You Don’t Get to Not Care — You Choose What to Care About
You only have so much emotional energy each day. Spend it wisely.
Care about: your health, your standards, your work, your relationships
Care less about: random opinions, internet noise, being liked by everyone
Confidence is selective emotional investment.
4. Remember You’re Going to Die
Morbid? Maybe. Clarifying? Completely.
When you zoom out, most rejection isn’t that serious.
Most opinions don’t matter.
Most fear is inflated.
If time is limited, what actually deserves your energy?
5. It Might Not Be Your Fault, But It Is Your Responsibility
This one is uncomfortable.
Something can be unfair and still be yours to deal with.
Blame “feels” powerful.
Ownership actually is powerful.
This is where real confidence starts.
The subtle art isn’t not caring. It’s caring with intention. It’s deciding what aligns with your values and letting go of everything that doesn’t. That’s where real confidence starts!
