Anti-Aging Alkaline Superfoods

If you want the secret to looking and feeling younger, alkaline superfoods might just be your answer. I know there are hundreds of diets anywhere from keto to Whole 30, and I’m certainly not a fan of fad diets that are unsustainable. A healthy, holistic and balanced lifestyle is always the best approach to wellness IMO. However, the alkaline diet (which consists of eating foods with a higher pH in order to offset the acidity that builds in your stomach) has been gaining a lot of popularity lately. Celebrities like Gwyneth Paltrow and Jennifer Aniston swear by the alkaline diet, so I wanted to see what all the hype was about.

I’ve talked a lot, both on the blog and on my podcast, about gut health and the importance of having a balanced gut microbiome, and the alkaline diet helps to regulate your gut’s pH balance. We can measure the pH level of the foods we eat as being acidic or alkaline. Water is at a neutral pH of seven and anything lower than a seven is considered acidic. Foods such as sugar, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods are considered highly acidic and have the potential to upset your digestion and cause your gut pH to become imbalanced. Eating too many acidic foods could also trigger mitochondrial dysfunction, premature aging, inflammation and chronic illness. So, if you suffer from gut issues like constipation or bloating, then it could be a sign that your pH is imbalanced.

The good news is, our body has the ability to regulate its pH level through the right diet and lifestyle choices. Alkaline foods are generally plant-based, nutrient-rich and full of antioxidants. A diet high in alkaline foods has been known to support glowing skin, longevity, and optimal health and well-being. So, if you want to know which alkaline superfoods you could add to your diet for anti-aging effects, here’s a list you could take on your next grocery run:
