Everything You Need To Know About Skinimalism

Skinimalism is 2021’s refreshing take on beauty – and this year, we’re embracing slow beauty and letting natural skin shine through. I like to think of skinimalism as more of a lifestyle shift vs. a beauty trend because not only is this routine effortlessly chic but it’s also simple and sustainable. It puts an emphasis on banishing beauty ideals and the idea of “covering up” or “fixing flaws” and encourages you to embrace the REAL you. Here is everything you need to know about this type of skincare-related minimalism.

Skinimalism is basically all about going to the basics; simplifying and streamlining your beauty regime, embracing your skin’s natural texture, finding clean beauty products with natural ingredients for a good glow and creating natural, dewy looks that look great both in person and on Zoom calls.

I think we’re all pretty familiar with – or at least heard of – the 12-step skincare routine, but it can overload your skin. Overloaded skin presents differently on everyone but it usually looks like breakouts, tight and dry skin, sensitivity and redness. Add maskne and pandemic-induced stress and anxiety to the mix and these skin issues are more likely to last longer. You can give your skin a break by ditching the complicated multi-step skincare routine for a stripped back version with minimal products. Not only is this better for the environment (reducing waste and carbon footprints) and saves you time, money and unnecessary trial and error but experts say it’s also a lot better for your skin!

The ultimate simple skincare routine includes:

-CLEANSER. Regardless of your skin type, a cleanser should be in both your AM and PM skincare routine – even if you aren’t wearing makeup!

-SERUM. To get truly glowing skin, vitamin C serum is my holy grail. It’s an antioxidant, which protects the skin against pollution and other free radicals, reduces hyperpigmentation and wrinkles, evens skin tone and increases collagen production.

-MOISTURIZER. Using moisturizer in both the AM and PM ensures a healthy skin barrier.

-SPF. You guys know how seriously I take sun safety – and it all starts with SPF. Sun damage is the easiest and fastest way you can damage your skin. Make sure you’re including a broad-spectrum sunscreen in your AM skincare routine to prevent fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots!

-NIGHT TREATMENT. Consider adding a gentle retinoid night serum or cream to your PM skincare routine, especially if you’re in your mid-20s and upwards. It’s one of my favorite anti-aging ingredients. On top of reducing fine lines and wrinkles, retinoids also boost collagen production, exfoliate the top layers of skin cells, help the skin’s outer layer to grow more quickly and stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin color.

Will you be embracing skinimalism? I’d love to hear what you think!
