Unsexy Things I Do to Stay Hot at 40

Everyone wants to know the “secret” to looking good at 40. The truth is, most of it comes down to really simple habits that aren’t glamorous at all. These are the unsexy things I do that actually make the biggest difference.

Concealer

I’ve historically never used makeup under or around my eyes, but recently I’ve become hooked on this brightening concealer. It makes your eyes look so fresh and awake. I’m now using it on just a few spots instead of a full face of foundation, and my makeup looks so much better.

Tinted Brows & Lashes

I swear by tinted brows and lashes and this is the product I use. They really make the eyes pop and look more youthful. There’s no reason to get this done professionally once you know how to do it properly. It also doesn’t irritate my eyes the way professional tints do.

Dry Brushing

I do this before showering 3–4 times a week. Not only is it great for the lymphatic system (way less puffy), it also helps exfoliate and keep my skin smooth and tight. I love dry brushing so much! This is the one I use.

Microneedling Roller

This one is definitely controversial. This specific at-home microneedling roller was designed by the doctor who invented in-office microneedling. I mainly use it on my chest and on certain areas of my face where I want to help drive products deeper. It doesn’t “drag” the skin, and I always keep it sterile. I swear it’s helped with problem areas—especially chest wrinkles and pigmented spots on my face.

Clean Towels

I refuse to use regular towels with harsh detergents on my face if I don’t have to, especially during the cleansing oil step of my skincare routine. These are super gentle and great for removing makeup too.

Jan Marini Corrective Pads

These are basically an at-home facial. I do them 1–2 times a week to keep my skin even, clear, and glassy. They’ve helped so much with old acne spots and other pigmentation issues. Youthful skin = even skin.

Body Care

If I had to pick three products for keeping my skin youthful, smooth, and hydrated, it would be Gold Bond Age Renew Hand and Body Lotion, Shani Darden Body Reform Treatment Serum, and Naturium The Glow Getter Body Oil. Applying oil on wet skin after a shower is a game changer. You can still use actives once they’ve absorbed. If you want the actives to work stronger, apply the oil afterward.

Hair Oil

I had so much hair breakage and couldn’t figure out why my hair was growing at the root but not at the ends. Since I started using this Roz Hair Oil on my ends before showering, I’ve noticed so much less breakage. Applying oil before showering is a simple hack that’s a total game changer.

Scalp Hydrating Serum

This was recommended to me by one of my hairstylists. Healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp. I’ve noticed such a difference. My hair is softer, my scalp isn’t as dry, and it’s growing much faster. It also doesn’t leave my hair greasy.

Silk Scrunchie

We focus so much on our hair products, then roll around at night snagging our hair on cotton pillowcases. (I love a silk pillowcase for beauty purposes.) I put my hair in a bun with these silk scrunchies, and it saves me from breakage while helping prolong a blowout. I also linked a silk bonnet if you want to be extra and keep your hair looking fresh like day one.

Magnesium

Beauty sleep is a real thing! When I don’t get enough sleep, it shows in my skin, not to mention my energy, appetite, and mood. Everything feels off. There are a lot of magnesium supplements I like, but this is the one I’m currently loving.
